Maotai Town is located in the Chishui River Valley and is a town under the jurisdiction of Renhuai City, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. Backed by Zunyi and facing south of Sichuan, it is a crucial hub for water and land transportation between Sichuan and Guizhou, known as "Sichuan salt travels through Guizhou, while Qin merchants gather in Maotai.
The stratum of Maotai Town is mostly composed of sedimentary rock, especially the purple sandstone. After 70 million years of geological changes, it has already weathered into sandy soil containing various trace elements, with a depth of more than 50 cm.
Brewing requires cellaring, and the sandy soil in Maotai Town has moderate acidity and alkalinity, rich in various beneficial components, with an organic matter content of about 1.5%, presenting a multi granular structure that is easy to dissolve and absorb. This type of soil has a high content of sandy and gravelly soil, which is loose, porous, and highly permeable. It contains various trace elements that dissolve under surface water and enter the underground, becoming an important water source for brewing in Maotai Town.
